Welcome to North Ayrshire's Arran Outdoor Education Centre
Located on the shores of Lamlash Bay on the beautiful Island of Arran,
our purpose built Outdoor Education Centre
is the perfect place to access the outdoors. The Island of Arran is famous for its
granite mountains and remote forest trails, while its sheltered bays form beautiful
anchorages. These wild and stunning landscapes are the perfect 'Scotland in miniature'.
At the Arran Outdoor Education Centre, we want you to know what to expect whether
you are a Pupil, Teacher, Parent or Guardian, we want you to enjoy the experience
of learning outdoors!

Our schools course supports 'A Curriculum for Excellence.' It is delivered using
critical skills techniques with the added advantage of learning in the real world.
Our aim is to offer children and young people the opportunity to access the curriculum
in a new and more relevant way that is both exciting and enjoyable.
The primary Schools programme at Arran Outdoor education Centre is designed for
P7 children who are about to make the transition to secondary school. The focus
of the programme is children and their personal and social development through outdoor
activities. Courses are of a multi activity format allowing children to experience
many outdoor activities. This range of activities will enable children to make considered
choices later, on whether to follow these activities or not. The day time activities
are supported by an evening programme which includes teamwork and reviewing. This
encourages children to reflect on their own performance and take forward their own
personal and social development
All our p7 Courses encompass the
John Muir Award.
Curriculum for Excellence
Our entire P7 courses meet certain aspects within the Curriculum for Excellence
Courses are generally run over five days, comprising four nights, three full days,
and a half day on Monday and Friday.
Because of the nature of the course and to permit access to varied types of challenging
conditions and terrain, the group ratio is maintained at 1:12 on land based activities
excluding Mountain Biking which is 1-8 ratio. Where possible we aim for each team
to work with the same instructor throughout the week to enable very important bonds
to be formed both between the children and instructor. We positively encourage visiting
school staff to join the children on the activities.
The Centre also offers a
leadership and development programme aimed at S3 level. This course
has been designed by our very experienced staff over a period of years who have
themselves vast and varied experience in personal development. Added to this we
are able to offer a weekend aspiration course aimed at S5-6 which enable young adults
to realise their own potential as well as raising attainment.
Whilst we understand that most young people who come to stay at the centre are excited
about the activities, we believe that the social interaction of living and being
with each other is just as important as the activities themselves. This enables
young people to learn lifelong social skills which will support them well past their
